    Firefox 3 and JSON

title-firefox1Has anyone else run into problems with their JSON and Firefox 3? We are rounding up development on one of the projects I am working on and Firefox 3 has thrown us a curve ball. Firefox 2, Safari 2.04, Safari 3, IE 6, IE 7 all test out fine on Mac and Windows.I have read that there was a new JSON interpreter in FF3, but I expected new…to mean better, not broken. Any thoughts?

  • Where have you been?

    Where have you been?

Well…to make a long story short I’m a loser. Not in the classical “parental basement dwelling” sense of the word, but in the “I’m neglecting my blog sense”. So here are the updates. I’ve started my new job at a fantastic company Pearson, as the Senior User Interface Designer. I will get to draw on my years of experience with user experience to help push their applications Power Teacher Gradebook, and Power School, to the next level along with a team of talented developers, and product managers. So far its great place to work and great people to work with.

In other news, and I post this with some reluctance, but I’m not given much choice. My wife’s former employer MusicTalk, Inc. has failed to pay my wife’s salary owed for last year. So far they owe us a total of roughly $20,000. We have heard nothing from their CEO Bobbie Brown, or any representatives of the company’s board of directors. We are awaiting the final judgment from the California State Labor Board, and once that is completed they would have 20 days to appeal. Considering that Bobbie didn’t show up to either the conference or the hearing at the Labor Commission I don’t expect that there will be any appeal, or any word from Bobbie Brown or MusicTalk. We will be looking into what our options are at this point. If anyone has information about this agency, or its business dealings please contact me.

I think I picked a fight with Fred Showker

I have participated from time to time on the DT&G forums. Mostly to get feedback on site designs, and to provide suggestions to other designers. I got this flippant comment on my design by somebody named fred. (I didn’t capitalize his name, because he didn’t) I chose to respond, by asking them to back up their claims with examples.

  • Where is web design today?

    Where is web design today?

Many people now rely on the web as a source for their lifestyles; research, maps, gossip, movie rentals, shopping. Now that this tool is so heavily used I thought it would be good to think about where it started, and where it is today from a design perspective. In the early days websites were pretty horrible to look at, lots of blinking, flashing things, dancing hamsters, BIG FONTS, red text on black backgrounds etc… (I could go on, but I know some of you are already getting nauseous. Thankfully most of the world wide web has moved past designs like these:

  • Silly Lawyer, what are you thinking?

Silly Lawyer, what are you thinking?

silly-lawyerAccording to John W. Dozier, Jr., the “Super Lawyer”, viewing his site’s HTML source, as in, “right-click – view page source” is illegal. They are trying to claim that viewing their page source is a copyright violation. Additionally they have an End User License Agreement, EULA prohibiting this behavior, as well as forbidding links to their site.

Now the interesting thing is that the code for the home page, as an example, is really poorly built. They still use tables for layout, and the JavaScript is embedded in the header. Worse still they are an internet law firm.

There are a few things that strike me as ludicrous from a developer’s standpoint. (more…)

  • The value of critiques

    The value of critiques

One of the most valuable aspects of a classroom environment, or working as a team, is the peer review and critique process. When each designer uses their personal experience to interpret the subject they bring a potentially unique view or technique to resolve the design problem. Each designer bring solutions that the other designers may not have considered. As a team reviewing these unique solutions each designer can draw on the experience and take away a much broader perspective on design. (more…)

I did it. I uploaded my new site design, and made it live. Now I need to create the blog template using this same style.

    Software and Web Development Methodology

I’ve recently been victim to a number of software roll outs that were being managed by other people. Each of these experiences brought a single question to mind…What are they thinking? Either they stopped teaching best practices at the university, or I have had the distinct pleasure of witnessing projects that followed some unique system of development designed to screw everything up. In either case these recent experiences have compelled me to elaborate on what I feel are the cardinal rules for software/web development practices. (more…)

  • Why re-invent the wheel

    Why re-invent the wheel

Companies need to check to see if there’s already a solution before solving problems. The new wheel is Tabblo, a slick web based technology for internet users to print blogs, images on flickr, and other web sites. Whoo-hoo now I can print web pages… Hmmm I don’t remember not being able to print web pages before. Well here’s the story. (more…)
