Web design presentation at Taylor Street Elementary

Today I did a presentation on web design and design process to my daughters’ gate classes. It was an exciting opportunity to offer their classes some insight into the exciting world of design and learning new technologies.

So for any of the kids at Taylor Street Elementary reading this… I enjoyed speaking with you today, and look forward to learning with you again.

I think I picked a fight with Fred Showker

I have participated from time to time on the DT&G forums. Mostly to get feedback on site designs, and to provide suggestions to other designers. I got this flippant comment on my design by somebody named fred. (I didn’t capitalize his name, because he didn’t) I chose to respond, by asking them to back up their claims with examples.

  • Where is web design today?

    Where is web design today?

Many people now rely on the web as a source for their lifestyles; research, maps, gossip, movie rentals, shopping. Now that this tool is so heavily used I thought it would be good to think about where it started, and where it is today from a design perspective. In the early days websites were pretty horrible to look at, lots of blinking, flashing things, dancing hamsters, BIG FONTS, red text on black backgrounds etc… (I could go on, but I know some of you are already getting nauseous. Thankfully most of the world wide web has moved past designs like these:

  • Silly Lawyer, what are you thinking?

Silly Lawyer, what are you thinking?

silly-lawyerAccording to John W. Dozier, Jr., the “Super Lawyer”, viewing his site’s HTML source, as in, “right-click – view page source” is illegal. They are trying to claim that viewing their page source is a copyright violation. Additionally they have an End User License Agreement, EULA prohibiting this behavior, as well as forbidding links to their site.

Now the interesting thing is that the code for the home page, as an example, is really poorly built. They still use tables for layout, and the JavaScript is embedded in the header. Worse still they are an internet law firm.

There are a few things that strike me as ludicrous from a developer’s standpoint. (more…)

  • The value of critiques

    The value of critiques

One of the most valuable aspects of a classroom environment, or working as a team, is the peer review and critique process. When each designer uses their personal experience to interpret the subject they bring a potentially unique view or technique to resolve the design problem. Each designer bring solutions that the other designers may not have considered. As a team reviewing these unique solutions each designer can draw on the experience and take away a much broader perspective on design. (more…)

    Whew…First pass

I did it. I uploaded my new site design, and made it live. Now I need to create the blog template using this same style.

    When it rains it pours

I’ve been stacked up lately with contract work. It’s nice to have the extra, but man some nights I would like to just like to kick back. Oh well, no rest for the wicked. Beyond the training development that I am working on at HP as my day job, and the work I just completed for Strukture.com, here are the projects on my plate:

    • A new Diablo Cup t-shirt design
    • A minor site redesign for 1031it.com
    • Updates for ThomasCory.com
    • The FarishtaMakeup.com site design
    • Updates to my site for a gallery, and changes to my portfolio
