I’m not much different than most designers and developers, I loath Internet Explorer. But I understand why they are slow to embrace change, specifically standards.

There has been a lot of advertising lately indicating that the browser wars have resumed their assaults on our senses and reasoning skills. Just for kicks I thought I would verify the latest Acid3 scores posted in some recent press. Let’s just say I can’t find a 100% to match the WWDC screens…Not that the competition in Redmond is doing anywhere near as well. 3/100 cough cough 20/100 cough. Pathetic.

iPhone ChatterBox Cable
I am presently on a quest to get my gear connected. My iPhone to pump music and phone calls into my helmet, and my ChatterBox HJC-FRS so that I can communicate with other riders and my passenger. I do listen to music on long rides to break up the wind noise, but don’t really plan on making phone calls while driving. (probably just listening in on early morning conference calls) So how am I going to do this? The obvious solution is to use the equipment I already have and modify it to meet the requirements. So here’s the inventory. EDIT: This cable may break your ChatterBox. I have discovered that the Microphone circuit on my ChatterBox no longer transmits! I do not know if it was this cable that did it…

Why do 26% of you still use IE6?
In pondering my Google analytics I discovered that 26% of my IE readers this last month still use IE6…WHY? I thought there might be a lot of Windows 98 users still bouncing around the interwebs. MusicTalk.org Owes Us Money
MusicTalk Inc. Labor Commission Settlement It is with much regret that it has come to this. It has been almost a year since the California State Labor Commission has awarded my wife a settlement in her case against her former employer MusicTalk Inc. Sarah worked for them for a long time as a paid employee and then the paychecks stopped coming. Bobbie Brown made repeated promises that this would be resolved as soon as she got her funding check.

A month ago I noticed that my father-in-law’s Honda Civic had been tampered with. I wasn’t sure if it was done by the previous owner or when it was parked at my house. Then yesterday when I was filling my tank I noticed my car had been tampered with too. (more…)

Internet Explorer should die
Every now and then the festering issue of IE as a viable browser rears it’s ugly head. This eventuality usually occurs right around the release of a new version. Microsofts latest iteration, IE8, was slated to be released without standards mode being the default rendering mode. With all the progress that the web comunity has made with standards why wouldn’t this be the default? (more…)

Wow! I love my iPhone…
What an amazing tool. The iPhone is such an enabler. I am writing this blog right now from my iPhone. I never would have thought that something like this would be this easy. At this point I can check email, write my blog, keep in touch through IM, social networks, oh and make phone calls.
The one thing I’m learning to appreciate is good design and development. Some of the applications I’m looking at are just not not very well thought out.
The real consideration needs to be me, the end user. What does the customer have to do to accomplish their job? If the developer can’t walk in the user’s shoes more likely than not the product will not do it’s best to aid the user in their task… Doing their job. So does that mean that the developer has not done theirs?
I think this is the challenge that all developers must accept. Their success or failure is in how well the product accomplishes it’s goals. My first goal as a user interface designer is meeting the user where they are, not where I want them to be. Know the task, understand the user, and always strive for the elegant solution.

It was 20 years ago today…
Well no quite, maybe more like ten. The last time I swung my leg over a bike for an actual race. This Sunday I plan on running with the bulls in Sacramento. It’s Cyclocross season again and I’ve got that itch again to race. The series here in Sacramento begins this Sunday at Del Paso Park. I’m really looking forward to the pain and suffering… Here’s a few pictures of my old faithful bike.
